Keys To Success – Business Networking

One of the primary reasons to invest time and effort into business networking is to get more business. Yet, for many the outcome of greater business remains elusive.

Business Networking – How To Get More Business

As a personal business coach one of the first things I ask a potential client, whether it be a self – employed small business owner or a corporate manager or executive, is if they are doing any business networking. Most of them will tell me that they do some business networking.

The main reason they do business networking is to get more business. When I ask how successful it has been the answers range from very successful to virtually no success at all.

How come one person has great success and another doesn’t. Is one’s product or service in greater demand? Possibly, but very often it has nothing to do with that.

Business Networking – Success Is About How You Fish

For a moment visualize a business networking event as a big pond with many fish. You have come together with a group of other people and all of you are fishing in the same pond. Some of you will catch fish, prospects, referrals and customers. And most of you will put your bait on a hook and come up with nothing.

What’s causing the difference in results? It could be the pond you are in. Maybe the fish you are swimming with aren’t ideal for you or your business. But, more often than not it is not the fish in the pond that is the problem.

The problem is how you are choosing to fish in that pond. Especially for small business owners seeking more small business growth and success how you fish is a critical determinant in your results.

Running a small business is a big enough challenge to your time and energy without engaging in business networking that is not producing positive results. So if the pond of your business networking is not yielding the results you desire, yet appears to be a good pond, then you must change the way you fish in the pond.

Business Networking – It’s About The Human Being And Not The Human Doing

How do you catch a fish? It’s easy. You give him some bait where he wants to bite on your hook. The best hook you have is you. It’s not your business. It’s not your service. It is who you are. Most people when you engage them do not need your product or service.

The key is that they certainly may need it at some point in time in the future. The goal is to start building a relationship with them based on who you are, not what you do. In the end they will do business with someone they know, like and trust.

The key to successful business networking is to get beyond the human doing, your business, and let others get to know the human being. Focus on learning about who someone else is. Reveal to them more about yourself. It will give you and them many more reasons to build a solid relationship.

Focus on the human being, not getting business. And, the last part is the most important. If you have business networking functions every month attend them regularly. Even if business is good and you feel too busy attend them regularly.

Great relationships aren’t built with intensity but with regular contact over a period of time. Be consistent in showing up and persistent in building your relationships. When you approach business networking as an essential marketing activity focusing on human beings instead of human doings you will start catching a lot more fish in your pond and even greater small business, large business and personal success.

Making a Successful Business: Three Easy Steps For Achieving a Successful Personality

Start with Duplicating Human Excellence when Making a Successful Business…

Making a successful business these days has a lot to do with modeling after a successful personality. Successful people seem to have unconscious competence, a naturally successful personality, because getting dressed to impress just doesn’t do it anymore. People will see through the BS every time, and they want what’s real. Gone are the days of melodrama, and make room for a reality show on every celebrity out there! A true “successful personality” acts with unconscious competence.

But just how do you attain a “successful personality?”

The easiest way is to simply model after someone who is successful. Now, this is easier said than done. But I’ve laid out for you three easy steps to follow, once you find that successful personality you want to model after.

First, examine your successful personality model’s belief system…

And change your beliefs to match theirs. Most successful personally models out there have similar belief systems. Although they come from various religious backgrounds, the core belief is the same: the law of attraction. Almost every spiritual book out there has scriptures to back the law of attraction, so you can find a successful personality who may be Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist or other and they all tend to believe that they need to take on responsibility for their own actions. When you can assume responsibility for the things that have happened to you, and when you can admit that the life you’re living today was created as a result of your own actions, then that gives you extreme personal power to change the outcome of your life! Also, making a successful business has to do with believing that there is no such thing as failure. You may not always accomplish the goal you set out for on the first try, but you did succeed in creating a result. From that result, you can learn and try again. Colonel Sanders himself didn’t even set out to start his business until the age of 65, and he received 1009 “no way get out of here old man” responses to his attempt to sell his recipe before he received the first “yes, I’ll use your recipe”. See, he never failed; he only generated 1009 “results” to learn from to bring him his first open door for making a successful business. One thousand nine negative responses! Who has that kind of motivation? A successful personality does!

Second, examine your mentor’s syntax for making a successful business…

What do I mean by this? Syntax refers to the order of thinking and acting. For example, some people respond to a given stimulus without thinking, and others think it through first. Some people will never make a decision without “sleeping on it”. Others will go with their gut feeling. You can tell if a person is thinking or remembering by the body language and direction of the eyes as they contemplate a problem, create a story or try to remember something in their past. A successful personality will handle problems with ease, almost seemingly not getting at all upset, but rather embracing the problem as a challenge and a chance to learn, analyzing the problem logically so as to act in the best way possible.

Third, examine the physiology of your successful personality model….

This means the way they move, breath, act, their eating and sleeping habits. Increased physical energy alone can be attained simply by changing one’s personal dietary habits. Find out what your role model does to get the creative juices running.

Making a successful business has everything to do with taking action!

You have to stretch yourself. I’m sure you’re aware that, when working out or training to run, you can’t train yourself to run further until you make yourself go just a little bit past your comfort zone each time you run. When you get to the point of thinking you might collapse, but then you convince yourself to push on… that’s when you can train to go the extra mile. This it not only fact in physiology, it’s a metaphor for stretching yourself by getting past your comfort zone just a little bit to achieve higher chance of making a successful business.

“Making a successful business” can be achieved by absorbing your mentor’s successful personality…

It seems to work like osmosis, but the more you listen to audio recordings from a known successful personality, the more you become like that person. Over time, you begin to find yourself thinking, acting, and talking with the same confidence.

Successful Business Skills

Success in business is a matter of learning and mastering certain skills. Here are some tips that can help you succeed:

Learn to Delegate – Successful managers know when and how to delegate tasks to others. One of the most important skills that set a manager apart is that they are willing and able to delegate tasks to their employees. When a manager delegates he can operate more efficiently as well as deliver results on a timely manner.

Constantly Improve Your Business Processes – There is always something new to learn and there is also always something that can be done better. Improvement is fundamental for success in business. Look for those opportunities to improve and create your own success.

Separate Personal Life From Business Life – No matter what is going on in your personal life, leave the problems at home but also leave the office matters at work. It is very important not to stress out at work with situations and problems with friends or relatives, this will prevent your from being successful.

Know and Correct Your Weaknesses – Being successful means being able to identify and correct weaknesses. Successful business people are not afraid to recognize their weak areas, by doing so they become more efficient instead of having to manage anger.

Do not let Your Emotions Run Your Business – Emotions can be an important factor of success. Emotions run both ways, they can help you focus and achieve your goals. But emotions can also have a negative impact on the results. Emotions can make you take poorly thought out business decisions. Instead of letting emotions get the best of you, use them in your favor to achieve success.

Create and Participate in Business Networking – A very important part of success in business is networking with other managers and employees and also with people from other companies. Learn from them, find out how they run their business and also find ways to work with them. Networking relationships complement each other.

Be Honest – Let others point out your mistakes, allow employees and other managers to speak freely and correct them if need so, but also allow yourself to be corrected.

Differentiate Your Business from the Competition – Whether you are competing internally or competing against other companies, differentiating is an important factor and most of the times a good idea.

Be Fast – Timing is important and it is a trait of successful business people. Start early and move fast, it can be the difference between positive results and even bankruptcy. Successful businesses do not follow they lead.

Two Important Secrets for Successful Business Women Who Want to Grow and Advance

The current business climate is making it tough on everyone. The state of affairs is compounded for successful business women who still feel impacted by lack of opportunities based upon their gender. But the reality is that we have limited control over the business conditions or these gender disparities. Female leaders alone can’t grow the economy alone or fix diversity problems.

They can complain and get side-tracked or maybe take a different look at the problems. To start turning these concerns into opportunities for success. The challenges are real but we wonder if sometimes our reactions to such events tend to be more significant and do more to hold us back than anything else.

Even in the best of times, corporate women or women CEOs in particular face many common obstacles such as poor work-life integration, lower self-confidence to advance themselves and limited organizational help and support to help them be more successful.

Strengths

Female leaders tend to be much more restrained than men when it comes to self-promotion. But the reality is to be successful, the right amount and type of self-promotion is critical. And who will do it if they don’t do it for themselves? You certainly do not want to (and should not) go unnoticed for your efforts. And while you can’t change overnight, there are a few ways for women leaders to develop the self-confidence to push through this challenge.

The first step is an honest evaluation of what you do well and what you don’t do well. If you are like most successful business women the evidence is there that you have done some things well to get you to where you are. Why did your successes occur? What did you do well? How could you replicate them? Take a look at your curriculum vitae to determine how your experiences helped created who you are. Once you have a better understanding of your background in the right context, you may start to view your experiences in a better light.

By focusing on your successes you’ll begin to approach each day in a position of strength and view challenges as a new opportunity to learn. Your work will improve, your confidence is likely to grow and your ability to self-promote yourself in the right way will grow too. Not something that will happen overnight, but with a daily commitment, perhaps a verbal affirmation recited daily, the changes will become apparent to you and everyone that you work with.

Work-life integration

Most successful business women (and men) struggle with work-life integration. We’ve given up calling it work-life balance because there is no such thing. It’s in truth how can you successfully mix all the various aspects of your life – work, family and leisure to feel successful and achieve your goals and aspirations. The first step we recommend for female leaders is just to sit down and rank your priorities. Look at how you typically spend most of your days. What do you enjoy the most? The least? These questions and their answers will offer some important clues as to what your priorities have been and could be going forward.

Then ask yourself – Do I feel energized most of the time. If so, your priorities are likely right on. If you don’t feel energized than you may not have the right priorities. Your lack of effective integration of your work, life, family and leisure is not positively impacting your life.

Once you have answered these questions, you should spend some time to lay out a realistic plan for yourself. You may not like the answers or wish that they were different, but you may not have any other choice. Living in this situation is not an effective long-term outline for anyone. Unchecked it could lead to split up, health issues, poor relations, lack of advancement and even termination.

The barriers are there and significant. Things are changing but at a glacial rate. You can sit back and wait or take matters into your own hands. Developing the self-confidence to promote yourself and having positive energy from a workable and supportive work-life integration can propel to you to career heights and business success that you never dreamed about. Good luck getting there and joining the ranks of the growing number of women CEOs and corporate women who are getting there.

The Top 10 Keys to Building a Successful Business

Building a business is both challenging and rewarding. It takes great ideas, resources, technical expertise and a lot of hard work to create a thriving enterprise. You can increase your chances for success by taking 10 key steps.

1. Honestly assess your strengths and weaknesses. Your first step in building a successful business is to take a look at yourself. Are you cut out to be an entrepreneur? Many of us are attracted to the glamorous aspects of business ownership, but it is very hard work. Successful entrepreneurs are resourceful, committed, objective and dependable. They also have a positive attitude, excellent communication skills and the requisite technical knowledge to succeed in their chosen field. Most significantly, successful entrepreneurs persevere during times of great difficulty.

2. Develop a comprehensive business plan. A business plan is your road map to profitability and success. One of the primary reasons for new business failure is inadequate planning. A well-conceived business plan describes the vision you have for your business, and the path you will take to achieve that vision.

3. Create an effective marketing strategy. Perhaps the single most important step you can take as an entrepreneur is to effectively market your goods and services. You can have the best products in the world, but if no one knows about them, your business will fail!

4. Develop a strong image package. Your image package is the physical manifestation of your brand and includes three elements: business name, tagline (your business motto or catchphrase) and logo. Your image package speaks to the vision you are trying to create for your business.

5. Select an appropriate business structure. A business can be operated through a variety of legal structures. A specific structure is generally chosen for liability and tax reasons. The most common types are sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations. Each has inherent strengths and weaknesses, and you must determine which structure will work best for your business.

6. Begin with adequate working capital. The single biggest reason for new business failure is undercapitalization. Many entrepreneurs have failed with potentially successful businesses because of a lack of capital. Smart entrepreneurs make sure they have cash reserves to dip into for unique opportunities or for a rainy day.

7. Learn to network effectively. Networking is the proactive process of developing mutually beneficial professional relationships designed to increase each person’s circle of associates. Effective networking will increase your customer base, communicate your brand and demonstrate your expertise to potential customers. It can also help you identify leads and improve your reputation. Because of its simplicity and ease of application, networking is one of the most cost-effective forms of marketing for your business.

8. Provide quality goods and services that meet customer’s needs. Simply stated, if you provide a high quality product that helps customers achieve their goals, you are much more likely to develop a successful business.

9. Develop a winning team. It is very hard to build a successful business on your own. You are going to need help. Two of the most important sources for this help should come from an accountant and an attorney. You may also want to create an advisory board to assist you with the decision-making process.

10. Use technology wisely. As an aspiring entrepreneur, you need to think about how you can use technology to increase sales, decrease costs and better communicate with customers. Some examples of technology that can result in improved quality and productivity include application software (e.g., accounting, data management), videoconferencing (e.g., virtual meetings, webinars and teleseminars) and internet marketing (e.g., e-mail marketing, social media marketing).
